For the sixth consecutive year we conducted Halloween-themed Punk Rope classes here in New York City, but this time we turned up the heat a notch. Since Tim has been a big fan of Rocky Horror since first dressing up as Frank N. Furter in 1978, it seemed fitting to go with a Rocky Horror theme. Shana dressed up as Magenta, Tim reprised his role as Frank, candy was served, and we played 15 classic songs from the movie. Just in case you’re curious, yes, it was fun to jump in fishnets.

On Monday morning we had the privilege of leading Punk Rope classes for more than 40 2nd and 3rd graders at Our Lady Queen of the Angels, a parochial school in the East Harlem section of New York City. We taught the children basic rope jumping, partner jumping, and long rope, and also led them in a hotly contested jump rope relay race with the song Speed Racer (sung by Everclear) blaring in the background. From the smiles on the kids faces it seemed that they enjoyed themselves AND got a good workout.

Punk Rope has been invited to present Hopping for Health workshops to PE teachers from the New York City Department of Education on Tuesday, November 2 and from the New Castle, DE School District on Monday, November 22. We have also been invited to teach 2 Punk Rope classes to 2nd and 3rd graders at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem, NYC. With childhood obesity and sedentary living among youth continuing to be major social problems we hope that more schools will come to realize that a play-oriented approach to fitness—such as the one offered by Punk Rope—could be the answer to getting kids to move more. “We’re competing with a vast array of sedentary activities that are backed by millions of dollars of marketing muscle” says Punk Rope creator, Tim Haft. “We’d better make physical activity fun or we won’t stand a chance as far as getting kids to move more.”

Our weekend in Philly started with a bang as we participated in the Great Urban Race (think scavenger hunt) and donned Oktoberfest costumes while traipsing around the city in 90 degree heat. It was actually a ton of fun and despite not knowing where we were going we finished 81st out of 315 teams. Had we not wasted so much time at the start or end we might have qualified for the GUR Nationals! The next day we rolled into City Fitness in Northern Liberties (a very cool hood) and certified 12 new Punk Rope instructors. Everybody seemed to enjoy themselves and the Oktoberfest-themed demo class went over surprisingly well even though all the songs were in German. We look forward to seeing Punk Rope grow in the Philly area. Already a class has launched at the Abington YMCA and there’s a good chance one will start at the Y in Doylestown, PA.

Pre-race chaos

As part of the Great Urban Race we had to high five somebody in uniform.

One of the race activities required us to pretend to jump into a fountain. Don’t ask.

We killed the boot camp activity which consisted of push-ups, squats, and smurf walks.

When we were invited by our friend Theresa Landau to conduct a “fun” workshop for her staff at Morrisania WIC as part of their professional development day I have to confess we were a bit uncertain as to what to do. We wanted to introduce them to a fun approach to fitness, but knew that the size of the room (smallish) and the staff (22) would prohibit us from using jump ropes. In the end we decided to hold a mini-Olympics by dividing the staff into three teams. What unfolded exceeded our wildest expectations. The Ciao Bellas, Initiators, and The Dream competed fiercely in five events, but probably laughed as much as they sweated, which in our book is a very good thing. It seemed that the staff really enjoyed themselves and also learned some valuable lessons about the basics of fitness. A unique aspect of the workshop was that two of the participants had their infants with them and in fact one played all of the games while holding her child!

By the way, if you’re not familiar with WIC, here’s a summary of what goes on at the center in Morrisania. They provide nutrition education and counseling; breastfeeding promotion, protection and support; health care linkages; childhood obesity prevention; and, specific nutritious foods to low income, nutritionally at risk, pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants and children less than five years of age.

14th Street Y Punk Ropers Cheryl Cohen and Sarah Sattin left New York City approximately a year ago to travel throughout Africa. Although their suitcases were already overloaded they kindly agreed to bring some jump ropes with them. In Tanzania they put the ropes to great use as you can see in the above photo. They not only donated the ropes to two orphanages, but also taught some of the children how to jump. You can see Cheryl, Sarah, and the kids in action in this video. In the next few days I’ll add some photos to our Facebook page. If you’d like to learn more about the orphanages and support their efforts check out the links below:

Haverhill is a classic, old, New England mill town, which once upon a time served as home to a thriving shoe and hat industry. Founded in 1640, the town of roughly 60,000 is perhaps best known as one of the main inspirations for the comic Archie. The comic’s creator, Bob Montana, attended Haverhill High from 1936 to 1939. He based Riverdale High School on the old high school building and the characters Archie, Jughead, Veronica, Betty, and Reggie on his classmates from Haverhill High School. Anyway, we were thrilled to conduct a Punk Rope Workshop at the Haverhill Y on 8/14 as well as our very first Punk Rope Playtime workshop at the Y the next day. Among the workshop attendees were three teens involved with a local violence intervention program and two former roller derby skaters from Portland, Maine. The “beach-themed” demo class on the 14th was attended by four kids with the youngest being 3. Suffice it to say that we had a very diverse group, which made the whole experience all the more satisfying. The post-workshop happy hour at J.P. McBride’s was also quite satisfying. There’s nothing quite like a few cold ones after a long day of hopping.

“Results from the 2007–2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) indicate that an estimated 34.2% of U.S. adults aged 20 years and over are overweight, 33.8% are obese, and 5.7% are extremely obese” write Cynthia L. Ogden, Ph.D., and Margaret D. Carroll, M.S.P.H., from the Division of Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. To put this another way, only 26.3% of U.S. adults are at a “normal” weight.

Personally, I’m not a huge fan of scales or BMI measurements. I’m much more interested in fitness than in weight, but these numbers are staggering and we’re not even including kids in the equation. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: an unfit nation is a weak nation. How in the world do we expect to return to economic prominence when we can’t even get our collective butts off the sofa? And if you thought you saw the worst of our healthcare problems and rising insurance premiums hold onto your hats. At this rate of “growth” things will get a lot worse.

While we can whine about the problem until we’re blue in the face, we need to start working on viable solutions. Unfortunately, most of the governmental and non-profit organizations charged with solving the crisis have been highly ineffective (and that’s being kind). To make it worse, they’re squandering billions of dollars that could be put to much better use. Too many groups are more interested in doing what’s politically expedient than in doing what’s right by our citizens. Trust me: we’ve worked with three coalitions, two government agencies, and more than a dozen non-profit organizations. We recently received a lucite plaque in the mail from a non-profit organization that will remain nameless (to protect the guilty) as a “thank you” for collaborating with them. Here’s the kicker: they refused to collaborate with us for two years in a row so we bailed on their end-of-year meeting! But they sent the “award” anyway. I wrote to them immediately and told them they should have used their money to buy jump ropes for the kids instead of polluting the earth with yet another meaningless plaque made in China by an underpaid worker.

Our belief is that to solve the sedentary living crisis you need to begin with children and you need to show them (not tell them!) that the pursuit of fitness can be fun and that healthy, well-prepared foods taste a hundred times better than the garbage they’re used to. There are lots of other simple steps you need to take, but I don’t have space to go into that here.

What I will do, however, is ask for your support. In light of the recent budget cuts, most schools can’t afford to invest in wellness programs thereby compounding an already dire situation. At our December 1 and December 6 happy hours, we’re going to hold two raffles, the proceeds of which will help support our school-based, Hopping for Health program. With the revenue from the raffle and from sales of ropes, shirts, and other products, we hope to be able to deliver Hopping for Health for FREE to at least a few schools.

If you like the sound of this here’s what you can do to help:
1) Buy raffle tickets and spread the word to your friends about the raffle and our mission (you need not be present at the drawing to win a prize)
2) Help us secure great raffle prizes. We’d live to have 10 prizes in all (five will be raffled off at each event). We’d prefer that each prize be valued at $50 or more retail.
3) Buy ropes. Buy shirts. Buy our DVD.

Thank you for your support!

Hop on!

We like to think of Punk Rope as a pretty sweet activity, but toss in some free, gourmet chocolate and now you’re really talking. Punk Rope and chocolate came together in spades on July 12 & 14 courtesy of Vosges in New York City. We thought French-style chocolate would be a great giveaway for our Bastille Day-themed classes and apparently Vosges thought so as well. Students were treated to champagne truffles, milk chocolate truffles, and caramel-filled truffles. There were no complaints about putting back the calories we had just expended. Hopefully we’ll do it again next year.
